The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center is proud to announce the 17th weekly line-up of its new global series, SEGAL TALKS, which was conceived, created and curated by Frank Hentschker in March 2020. New York, US, and international theatre artists, curators, researchers, and academics will talk daily for one hour with Segal Center’s director, Frank Hentschker, about life and art in the Time of Corona and speak about challenges, sorrows, and hopes for the new Weltzustand— the State of the World. The Segal Center is the only theatre institution in NYC and the US creating original content.
The newly introduced ad-free SEGAL TALKS will be live-streamed in English from Monday to Friday on HowlRound Theatre Commons and on the Segal Center Facebook. All the previous SEGAL TALKS will be found on HowlRound, the Segal Center Facebook, and the Segal Center YouTube Channel. The Segal Theatre Center will raise money for theatre artists and companies. This program is in collaboration with HowlRound Theatre Commons, based at Emerson College.

As a soloist, choreographer and master teacher, Ms. Gray has toured extensively across the U.S. and abroad as a tap dance artist since 1983 and in 1989 co-founded Tapestry Dance Company in Austin, TX with Deirdre Strand and currently serves as Producing Artistic Director & Artistic Director of The Soul to Sole Tap Festival. A graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts/NYC, Ms. Gray has shared the stage with numerous tap legends and contemporaries since chosen to work with the legend Charles ‘Honi’ Coles in America’s first creative residency for tap at The Colorado Dance Festival 1989 and again with Jimmy Slyde in 1990. Her book The Souls of Your Feet – A Tap Dance Guide for Rhythm Explorers has been translated in the Czech Republic and China and has been an Amazon.com Bestseller in its category since 1998. Her numerous awards include the prestigious “Hoofer Award” by The American Tap Dance Foundation and she was honored as a premiere member of the Austin Arts Hall of Fame in 2002. She was also nominated for a Princess Grace Award in the early 1990’s, served on the Steering Committee of The International Tap Plan and served as Director of The International Tap Association from 2008-2018. and honored at the 2018 Dance USA Conference. Her work The Souls of Our Feet – A Celebration of American Tap Dance was chosen as an NEA American Masterpiece production and toured throughout the US, Canada, and China from 2009-2012. She can also be seen in the tap documentaries A Class Act: The Magic of Honi Coles, Tap or Die, Thinking on Their Feet – Women of the Tap Renaissance and Passing it Forward produced by PBS/Arts In Context. Ms. Gray is also proud to be a 2019 Austin Creative Alliance Honoree.
Deborah Mitchell
Deborah Mitchell celebrates 26 years as Founder and Artistic Director of New Jersey Tap Dance Ensemble. Ms. Mitchell has a rich, extensive background and career with the art form of tap dancing. As protégé of Leslie “Bubba” Gaines of the Copasetics, this award winning tap professionals credits include The Cotton Club Motion Picture, Tony-Award Winning Broadway Production Black and Blue, PBS Great Performances and international tours with the legendary Cab Calloway performing with Germaine Goodson as The Rhythm Queens. She is one of the subjects of Tap Dancing America by Constance Valis Hill and the documentary Gotta Move, Women in Tap by Lynn Daly. Under her direction, NJTAP Dance Ensemble has received 2020, 2019 and 2018 Jersey Arts Peoples Choice Award Favorite Modern/Cultural Dance Company, and the Company has been a recipient of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Citation of Excellence.
Tony Waag founded the American Tap Dance Foundation a non-profit New York City based tap dance organization in 2001 with a mission of establishing and legitimizing Tap Dance as a vital component of American Dance through creation, presentation, education, and preservation. He also created Tap City, the annual New York City Tap Festival, International Tap Dance Hall of Fame, Tap Preservation and Hoofer Awards, the Gregory Hines Youth Scholarship Fund, Rhythm in Motion, Tap it Out, Tap Treasures, and the Gregory Hines Archives of American Tap Dance. As a performer and choreographer, he has been featured in hundreds of concerts, film and television productions. In January of 2010, he opened the American Tap Dance Center in New York City where he currently directs on-going education and training programs for tappers of all ages and levels.
Carl Hancock Rux is an American poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, actor, director, singer/ songwriter. He is the author of several books including the Village Voice Literary Prize-winning “Pagan Operetta,” the novel, Asphalt, and the Obie Award winning play, Talk. Rux is also a recording with four CDs to his credit, as well as a frequent collaborator in the fields of dance, theater, film, and contemporary art . He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Doris Duke Award for New Works, the Doris Duke Charitable Fund, the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA ) Prize, the Bessie Award, the Alpert Award in the Arts, a 2019 Global Change Maker award fellow, a Hayden Distinguished Fellow and Visiting Artist at Yale University and Associate Artistic Director of the Mabou Mines Theater Co. His archives are housed at the Billy Rose Theater Division of the New York Public Library, the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution as well as the Film and Video/Theater and Dance Library of the California Institute of the Arts.
Born in 1970, Philippe Quesne received his education in Visual Arts. For 10 years he designed sets for theater, operas and exhibitions. In 2003, he created the Vivarium Studio Company, and directed his first show, La Démangeaison des ailes, based on the acts of taking off and falling down.
Philippe Quesne hunts the marvelous, the tiny, and pushes to the extreme experiences of our daily lives as well as the relationship between mankind and nature. As he did as a child, collecting insects, he now works and studies small communities under his microscope. The scenography is used as an ecosystem in which he immerses his actors.
His shows, such as La Démangeaison des ailes (2003), Des expériences (2004), D’après nature (2006), L’Effet de Serge (2007), La Mélancolie des dragons (2008), Big Bang (2010), Swamp Club (2013), Next Day (2014), compose a repertory that tours all over the world. In addition to his work for the theater, he creates performances and interventions in public spaces or natural sites, and displays his installations in the context of exhibitions.
Since January 2014, he is the co-director of Nanterre-Amandiers, National Dramatic Center. In 2016, he created Caspar Western Friedrich at and Welcome to Caveland! at Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels. In 2018/2019, he created Crash Park, la vie d’une Île at TNB in Rennes, and in Nanterre-Amandiers and Farm fatale at Kammerspiele in Munich.
For the first time, he directed and created the set design of an opera, Usher adapted from Edgar Poe, music by Claude Debussy and Annelies Van Parys in 2018 at Staatsoper Unter den Linden. In 2019, he was the artistic director for the Prague Quadrennial where he was rewarded the prize for the best pavilion.
In 2020, he will create the set design for choreographer Meg Stuart’s new creation, Cascade and in 2021 a scenic version of Gustav Maher’s symphony Das Lied von der Erde at the Wiener Festochen (Austria) as well as a new show in Theater Basel.
Author of fifteen plays, Betty Shamieh is the Mellon Foundation Playwright in Residence at the Classical Theatre of Harlem. Her works include The Black Eyed (New York Theatre Workshop), Fit for a Queen (Classical Theatre of Harlem), The Strangest (The Semitic Root), Territories (Magic Theatre) and Roar (The New Group). Roar is currently being taught at colleges throughout the United States. Shamieh wrote and co-starred in her play of monologues, Chocolate in Heat: Growing Up Arab in America, in an extended off-off-Broadway run and over twenty university theatres. In 2016, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. A graduate of Harvard College and the Yale School of Drama, Shamieh was named a UNESCO Young Artist for Intercultural Dialogue, a Harvard Clifton Visiting Artist, and a Radcliffe Playwriting Fellow. Her works have been translated into seven languages. She is currently developing a new comedy Malvolio, a sequel to Twelfth Night. www.bettyshamieh.com
Adelheid Roosen is a Dutch theatre practitioner, actor, drama teacher and writer. In her theatre and film productions she often engages with controversial subjects such as honour killings, domestic violence, sexuality in the Islamic cultures, her mother’s Alzheimer’s disease. Everything can and must take place in the public sphere. Inspired by her experiences researching, writing and directing a trilogy about Muslim immigrants (1997–2006), Roosen developed a method through which theatre practitioners are ‘adopted’ by the local residents of a neighbourhood for a period of two weeks to ensure the formation of deep and genuine relationships with the ‘other’ and allow the artists to collect material based on real life experiences. The method has since taken root in both the national and international theatre world. In 2019, she won the Harpers Bazaar Woman of the Year Audience Award.
Adelheid has been teaching at the Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam for 33 years.
Melanie Joseph is a theatre maker and the founding Artistic Producer of The Foundry Theatre which she led for 25 years. She’s the editor/contributing writer of A MOMENT ON THE CLOCK OF THE WORLD, A Foundry Theatre Production (Haymarket Books) which tracks the evolving inquiry the company pursued with its aesthetic and political activities. Joseph is a recipient of the Doris Duke Artist Prize, a Lucille Lortel award for Creative Producing, a Skirball-Kennis T.I.M.E. Artist Prize, and she has twice been honored with special Obie Awards for “creating cutting edge work” and “engaging artists in some of the thorniest issues of the world we inhabit.
