The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center is proud to announce the new line-up of its new global series, SEGAL TALKS. Since the beginning of March the series featured close to 100 talks with 150 artists from 50 countries. New York, US, and international theatre artists, curators, researchers, and academics will talk daily during the week for one hour with Segal Center’s director, Frank Hentschker, about life and art in the Time of Corona and speak about challenges, sorrows, and hopes for the new Weltzustand— the State of the World. After a break in August the series will now also focus on Theatre, Performance and The Political, highlighting the Segal Center’s 2022 New York International Festival of the Arts Project and the Center’s Public Park Project. The Segal Center is the only theatre institution in NYC and the US creating new, original, daily content for the global field of theater and performance. The series was conceived, created and curated by Frank Hentschker in March 2020.

SEGAL TALKS are free, open access, without ads will be live-streamed in English from Monday to Friday on HowlRound Theatre Commons and on the Segal Center Facebook . This program is presented in collaboration with HowlRound Theatre Commons, based at Emerson College. All SEGAL TALKS are archived on HowlRound, and on the Segal Center YouTube Channel.

Join us for a conversation about curating, producing and presenting theatre and performance in the Time of Corona 

Jay Wegman is the Director of NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, where he has been responsible for the artistic direction and leadership since 2016. He previously served as Director of the Abrons Art Center at Henry Street Settlement from 2006-2016. During his tenure, Abrons was awarded a 2014 OBIE Award for Innovative Excellence and a 2015 Bessie Award for Best Production. He also served as Canon for Liturgy and the Arts at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine for over a decade and was a Fellow at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. He frequently serves on review panels for public funding and private foundations, and was awarded the 2015 Franky Award for “making a long-term, extraordinary impact on contemporary theatre and performance in New York City.” He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and Yale University.

Anne Hamburger

Anne Hamburger founded En Garde Arts in 1985 and is widely credited with pioneering the development of site-specific theatre in New York. After 13 years she left New York to become the Artistic Director of La Jolla Playhouse, but was shortly hereafter recruited to become the Executive Vice President for Theme Parks and Resorts for Disney. Since her return to New York, En Garde Arts has productions with social change at their core that have premiered at BAM and The Kennedy Center, and toured to over forty cities. In 2020, EGA premiered NY Times critics pick, Fandango for Butterflies (and Coyotes) at La Mama, launching a five-borough tour. En Garde Arts’ series Uncommon Voices that began in a 65 seat café featuring developmental work by artists engaged in social change was greenlit for eight episodes by WNET’s All Arts. Sean Anthony Chia, Dohyun Gracia Shin, Cory TamlerGabriel Torres, & Luke Pearlberg 
Join us for a conversation about curating, producing and presenting theatre and performance in the Time of Corona 

Sean Anthony Chia (he/him) is in his final year at Columbia University’s School of Arts in the Theatre Management and Producing Program. Sean is currently a Creative Executive for Prodigal (Jagged Little Pill), where he works on the creative development of television, theatre, and film productions that articulate the power of theatrical storytelling and music in modern entertainment. Prior to Prodigal, he built a creative toolkit through assisting and interning at companies such as William Morris Endeavor, Creative Artists Agency, ICM Partners, Telsey+Company, MCC Theater, Davenport Theatricals, Fox, Univision, and The New York Times. An Italian-Peruvian fusion from New Jersey, Sean is part of the Jubilee Theatre Festival for championing diversity in the American theatre and was a 2019 Recipient of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts Award. As an independent producer, he develops musical and television talent that radicalize conversations on race, ethnicity, sex, sexuality, and toxic masculinity. In Spring 2020, Sean co-founded Zoomfest Theatrical Podcast with playwright Devon Kidd. Since its founding, the podcast has connected over 75 artists and played to over 1,000 listeners. Sean is currently the Co-Chair of Film for Columbia University Life Events Council. He currently resides in the creatively chaotic confines of his New Jersey home. 

Dohyun Gracia Shin (www.dohyungraciashin.com [dohyungraciashin.com]) is a PhD student in Theatre and Performance at the City University of New York Graduate Center, as well as a graduate teaching fellow at the City College of New York and a pansori student. Her research focuses on theatre works that portray gender and sexuality within a matrix of power and considers how bodies regarded nonnormative in theatre might playfully challenge hegemonic and oppressive forces and structures. Her research interests lie in representations of women and LGBTQ in contemporary Korean theatre, contemporary adaption of pansori/changgeuk, and the US-American Gothic theatre.

Cory Tamler (www.corytamler.com [corytamler.com]) is a writer, translator, and interdisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in theatre, performance as research, and community organizing. Her current focus is on water dramaturgies, physics and theatre, and on using performance tools to re-orient the affective relationship between people and capitalist structures. She has created and participated in research-based performance projects in the United States, Germany, and Serbia, and has worked with museums and companies including the New Museum for Contemporary Art, The Civilians, The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center, James Gallery, Sprat Artistic Ensemble, Yinzerspielen, and the School of Making Thinking. A core artist with Maine-based civic arts organization Open Waters since 2010, Cory has written a play based on the lives and work of small-scale farmers in Southern Maine, led collaborative writing-science workshops with marine biologists and community members, and co-written a book of performance scores that help readers and performers step into the scales of migratory Penobscot River fish. She currently co-facilitates the Open Waters In Kinship Archives & Performance Fellowship with Darren Ranco and Jennie Hahn. Cory is a Ph.D. candidate in Theatre & Performance at The Graduate Center, CUNY, and a 2010–11 Fulbright scholar (Berlin). Her academic and critical writing and translations have been published by GrayLit, The Operating System, Performance Philosophy, Studies in Musical Theatre, Asymptote, Culturebot, The Offing, Extended Play, Howlround, and SCENA. She is a member of the editorial team of the GrayLit Culture Hub, a print and digital periodical for cultural work connecting Palestinian and Jewish histories to collective liberation.

Gabriel Torres (https://gabrielgtorres.com/ [gabrielgtorres.com]) is a multidisciplinary artist from Colombia and New York. Gabriel has directed readings and short plays with companies such as Theater Accident, Theater for The New City, The Tank NYC, Casa Ensemble Colombia, Hong Kong Arts Center, KrisP Productions Hong Kong, and many others.  He has also been published by BLANK Magazine, Mr Ma’Am Literary Magazine, Eleven and a Half and the Operating Room. Gabriel has a one Year Certification from The Neighborhood Playhouse Theatre. He also holds a BA in Liberal Sciences, and he is a candidate for a Media Studies MA at The New School, with concentrations in innovative storytelling, creative community development and a graduate certificate in Media Management. Gabriel was also part of the Riggio’s Honors Democracy and Writing Program, Creative Capital Professional Workshop for Artists 2019, and part of the EMERGENYC Hemisphere Institute Program 2020. Gabriel is proud to be a community organizer, he has worked as community coordinator for Fandango For Butterflies and (Coyotes) – En Garde Arts, He is currently a Community Consultant for Outer Seed Shadow, He hosts an initiative for site specific artists gathering together with Elise Bernhardt and Irina Kruzhilina, and He is currently developing a new engagement project for under represented latinx communities with Maria Torres O’connor.

Luke Pearlberg is a junior acting major at Pace University School of Performing Arts in the BA in Acting International Performance Ensemble program. Originally from Monmouth County New Jersey, Luke is a teaching artist at the Algonquin Arts Theater, as well as a recurring partner with the Algonquin Players. Specializing in the creation of new original works in a collaborative devised method, Luke and an ensemble of fellow company members from the IPE program last year launched the premier of an original work titled Cult Classics, and this spring will begin working on another original piece. Past credits include Macbeth (Macbeth), Giles Corey (The Crucible), Crutchie (Newsies), and Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). He is currently in rehearsals for an upcoming Pace production of The Last Days of Judas Iscariot in the role of Saint Peter.

ABOUT THE MARTIN E. SEGAL THEATRE CENTER

Originally founded in 1979 as the Center for Advanced Studies in Theatre Arts (CASTA), The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center was renamed in March of 1999 to recognize Martin E. Segal, one of New York City’s outstanding leaders of the arts. The Segal Center curates over thirty events throughout the Spring and Fall academic seasons, all free and open to the public. Dedicated to bridging the gap between the professional and academic theatre communities, the Segal Center presents readings, performance, lectures, and artists and academics in conversation. In addition, the Segal Center presents three annual festivals (PRELUDEPEN World Voices: International Pay Festival, and The Segal Center Film Festival on Theatre and Performance) and publishes and maintains three open access online journals (Arab StagesEuropean Stages, and The Journal of American Drama and Theatre).
