The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center is proud to announce the new line-up of its new global series, SEGAL TALKS. Since the beginning of March the series featured close to 100 talks with 150 artists from 50 countries. New York, US, and international theatre artists, curators, researchers, and academics will talk daily during the week for one hour with Segal Center’s director, Frank Hentschker, about life and art in the Time of Corona and speak about challenges, sorrows, and hopes for the new Weltzustand— the State of the World. After a break in August the series will now also focus on Theatre, Performance and The Political, highlighting the Segal Center’s 2022 New York International Festival of the Arts Project and the Center’s Public Park Project. The Segal Center is the only theatre institution in NYC and the US creating new, original, daily content for the global field of theater and performance. The series was conceived, created and curated by Frank Hentschker in March 2020.

SEGAL TALKS are free, open access, without ads will be live-streamed in English from Monday to Friday on HowlRound Theatre Commons and on the Segal Center Facebook . This program is presented in collaboration with HowlRound Theatre Commons, based at Emerson College. All SEGAL TALKS are archived on HowlRound, and on the Segal Center YouTube Channel.

Join us for a conversation about the Prelude 2020 pieces Good Byes

Kelsey Pyro (Music Producer and Vocalist for GOOD BYES, she/her) is a Brooklyn-based Black and Ojibwe artist from St. Paul / Minneapolis Minnesota. Specializing in music composition, sound art, and performance her work often incorporates genres, experiences, and stories from her African American and Native American identity. Kelsey has had the opportunity to share bills with MC Lyte, Naughty By Nature, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Wale, and more. Kelsey Pyro is also a recipient of The Shed Open Call Artist in Residence program, The Wyckoff House X Lincoln Center Protest Garden artist residency, and the 2018 and 2019 Brooklyn Arts Council Community Arts grant.

Mei Ann Teo (Creator of HOLD, they/she) is a queer immigrant theatre & film maker who works internationally at the intersection of artistic/civic/contemplative practice. As director/dramaturg/deviser, they make work across genres, including experimental participatory work, music theatre, and documentary theatre. Devised work includes an intermedial participatory work Labyrinth: Defining Humanity for the Beijing International Festival (Top 8 of Festival in Beijing News), and an original opera WAKE with composer Jon Bernstein and singer Marnie Breckenridge. Directing work includes: Dim Sum Warriors the Musical by Colin Goh and Yen Yen Woo, composed by Pulitzer Prize winner Du Yun for national China twenty-five city tour, Jillian Walker’s world premiere SKiNFoLK: An American Show at the Bushwick Starr (NYTimes Critics Pick, NYMag’s matrix “Highbrow and Brilliant”), and Madeline Sayet’s Where We Belong at Shakespeare’s Globe in London. Teo is the Artistic Director of Musical Theatre Factory. 

Shayok Misha Chowdhury (Creator, Director, Producer for VICHITRA, he/him) is a queer Bengali writer, director, and many-tentacled maker. Misha is a Resident Artist at Soho Rep and HERE Arts Center, a member of the Devised Theater Working Group @ The Public, and an alumnus of Ars Nova’s Maker’s Lab, New York Theatre Workshop’s 2050 Fellowship, the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, and residencies at BRIC, The Drama League, and SPACE on Ryder Farm. Recent: MukhAgni (Under the Radar); How the White Girl Got Her Spots and Other 90s Trivia (Joe’s Pub). Upcoming: The Other Other with Kameron Neal (Ars Nova), a queer Carnatic extravaganza (The Bushwick Starr), and a new collaboration with Aleshea Harris (New York Theatre Workshop). Zachariah Ezer (Playwright, Editor, and Sound/Projection Designer for SPEEDRUN, he/him) is a playwright/dramaturg/afropessimist who animates theoretical quandaries through dramaturgical forms. He has developed work in New York, DC, Chicago, Houston, and online. He is a Michener Fellow, a Town Stages Creative Arts Fellow, and a member of The Tank’s LIT Council. MFA: UT Austin (2023). Dominique Rider (Director of SPEEDRUN) is a Brooklyn-based director/dramaturg. They believe in living like it is the end of the world and answering the question: “What is a world unmade by slavery?” They are the director-in-residence for the National Black Theatre, a 2019 NAMT observer, and an inaugural member of Roundabout Theatre Company’s Directing Group & Mabou Mines’ Makers program.

Bryn Herdrich (Co-Creator of PENNY THOUGHTS, she/her) creates live performance events and directs new theatrical work. She has been the Associate Director of The Sound Inside by Adam Rapp at Studio 54, and recently co-directed Is it Supposed to Last created by William Burke at PlayCo. Other credits include: My Life Has Been Extraordinary (Joe’s Pub), Variations on the Main (JACK), Are We There Yet (The Bitter End), and Interabang (Ars Nova ANT Fest). Bryn has developed work at The Bushwick Starr, Clubbed Thumb, Williamstown Theater Festival, Ensemble Studio Theater, The Flea Theater, The Tank, Undiscovered Countries, and Dixon Place among others. Jeesun Choi (Co-Creator of PENNY THOUGHTS, she/her) is a transnational Korean playwright and physical theatre artist. Her plays move through diaspora, (im)migration, transnationalism to reveal the joy and agony of the human condition. Plays include BUST (Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab); Lost Coast (Nashville Rep’s Ingram New Works Festival, reading at New York Theatre Workshop); The Seekers (Bay Area Playwrights Festival Winner, O’Neill NPC Semifinalist, Bushwick Starr Reading Series, Fresh Ground Pepper Artist Retreat); Dahlia (Lark’s New Voices Fellowship Finalist, Dell’Arte International); Cecilies (Red Eye Theater, Minnesota Fringe Festival). She was awarded Artist of Exceptional Merit by Asian American Arts Alliance, and currently is the Ingram Lab Playwright at Nashville Rep, a member of EST/Youngblood, and a Usual Suspect at New York Theatre Workshop. She was a fellow at National Institute for Directing & Ensemble Creation at Pangea World Theater and a Works-in-Progress Artist at Red Eye Theater. John Collins (Director of BALDWIN AND BUCKLEY AT CAMBRIDGE, he/him) founded Elevator Repair Service in 1991. Since then he has directed or co-directed all of the company’s productions while also serving as the company’s Artistic Director. ERS productions directed by John include Cab Legs (1997), Room Tone (2002), Gatz (2006), The Select (2011), Arguendo (2013), and fifteen others. The company’s work, under his direction, has been seen in over a dozen countries as well as in cities across the U.S. John is an experienced sound designer and has worked for Richard Foreman, Target Margin Theater, and others. He worked as a designer and technician for The Wooster Group from 1993 until 2008. Current projects include Baldwin and Buckley at Cambridge, a new adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull, and a new project based on James Joyce’s Ulysses. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a United States Artists Fellowship, and a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award.

Yeujia Low (Co-Writer, Composer, Director for ANIMAL EMPIRE, she/her) is an actor-musician and theater maker who excels at the understated and intimate. She helps imaginative & visionary film and theater directors make their most bizarre ideas become reality. She sings, whines and gobbles. She plays the piano, violin and guitar, has danced for Graham alumni Jacqulyn Buglisi, and has been nominated for best actress twice in award-winning short films. Her own work has been performed at Triskelion Arts, the Actors Fund Arts Center, RAW Moves, Movement Research and in her bathroom, her kitchen, her head, bed and floor. Le’Andra LeSeur (Artist for PASSING TIME WITH GRACE, she/her) is an artist working primarily with video, installation, photography, painting, and performance. Her work celebrates blackness, contemplates the experience of invisibility, and seeks to dismantle and reclaim stereotypes surrounding black female identity, among other subject matters. Awards include Leslie-Lohman Museum Artists Fellowship (2019), the Time-Based Medium Prize as well as the Juried Grand Prize at Artprize 10 (2018). LeSeur recently appeared in conversation with Marilyn Minter at the Brooklyn Museum, presented by the Tory Burch Foundation and has lectured at RISD Museum of Art, Providence, RI, and SCAD Atlanta, among others. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at A.I.R. Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Assembly Room, New York, NY; Microscope Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Anacostia Art Center, Washington, DC; SITELAB, Grand Rapids, MI; Amika Dawkins, Atlanta, GA; and others. Residences include NARS Foundation, Marble House Project, and Mass MoCA. LeSeur is represented by Microscope Gallery.

Dena Igusti (Playwright, Actor, and Producer for CUT WOMAN, she/they) is a queer Indonesian Muslim poet, playwright, and producer born and raised in Queens, New York. She is the author of CUT WOMAN (Game Over Books). She is the co-founder of Asian multidisciplinary arts collective UNCOMMON;YOU and literary press Short Line Review. She is a 2018 NYC Youth Poet Laureate Ambassador and 2017 Urban Word Federal Hall Fellow. She is a 2019 Player’s Theatre Resident Playwright for her co-written Off-Broadway production SHARUM. She is a 2020 Ars Nova Emerging Leaders Fellow, 2020 Seventh Wave Editorial Resident, and part of Spotify Sound Up’s 2020 cohort. Her work has been featured in BOAAT Press, Peregrine Journal, and several other publications. She has performed at The Brooklyn Museum, The Apollo Theater, Lincoln Center, the 2018 Teen Vogue Summit, and several venues across the nation.

ABOUT THE MARTIN E. SEGAL THEATRE CENTER Originally founded in 1979 as the Center for Advanced Studies in Theatre Arts (CASTA), The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center was renamed in March of 1999 to recognize Martin E. Segal, one of New York City’s outstanding leaders of the arts. The Segal Center curates over thirty events throughout the Spring and Fall academic seasons, all free and open to the public. Dedicated to bridging the gap between the professional and academic theatre communities, the Segal Center presents readings, performance, lectures, and artists and academics in conversation. In addition, the Segal Center presents three annual festivals (PRELUDE, PEN World Voices: International Pay Festival, and The Segal Center Film Festival on Theatre and Performance) and publishes and maintains three open access online journals (Arab Stages, European Stages, and The Journal of American Drama and Theatre).
