Bettina Wagner-Bergelt took over the artistic direction of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch on 1 January 2019. From 2000 to 2016 she was deputy director of the Bayerisches Staatsballett and from 1990 to 2016 its head dramaturg. In Munich she built up an outstanding, international repertoire of modern and avant garde works. With the education programme she developed, CAMPUS Staatsballett, Bettina Wagner-Bergelt initiated a benchmark interdisciplinary outreach scheme for dance and ballet. In 1987 she founded the Munich festival DANCE – Internationales Tanzfestival der Landeshauptstadt München and was its artistic director in 1987, 1989, 2008 and 2010.
Héléna Pikon began dancing professionally in 1975, at first with Jacques Patarozzi in the company La Main. In 1981, Pina Bausch invited her to join the company as a permanent member of the ensemble. She was part of the original cast in Walzer, Carnations, On the Mountain a Cry was heard, Two Cigarettes in the Dark, Viktor, Ahnen, The Piece with the Ship, Ein Trauerspiel, Only You, The Window Washer, Wiesenland, Água, For the children of yesterday, today and tomorrow, Ten Chi, Full Moon, ‘Sweet Mambo’, as well as in Bon Voyage, Bob by the guest choreographer Alan Lucien Øyen. She also appeared in The Complaint of the Empress, a film by Pina Bausch, and in Wim Wenders’ film PINA.
Alec Duffy is the Founder/Co-Director of the OBIE-winning Brooklyn performance and civic space JACK (www.jackny.org), with a mission of fueling experiments in art and activism. Together with former JACK Co-Director DeeArah Wright, he conceived of Reparations365 — a series that examines the topic of distributive justice for Black Americans through performances, conversations, and workshops. Prior to founding JACK, he started the theater company Hoi Polloi, with whom he has created many original works, including Three Pianos, an OBIE-winning paean to Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle co-written and performed with Dave Malloy and Rick Burkhardt.
Brian Rogers is a director, filmmaker, video and sound artist, co-founder and artistic director of The Chocolate Factory Theater, which supports the creation of theater, dance, music and multimedia performances at its 5,000 sq ft facility in LIC, Queens. Since 1997, Brian has conceived and/or directed numerous large scale films and performances at The Chocolate Factory and elsewhere including Screamers (Abrons Arts Center, 2018 / Baryshnikov Arts Center, 2019), Hot Box (2012, FIAF’s Crossing The Line Festival / PS122’s COIL Festival / EMPAC Center), and the Bessie-nominated Selective Memory (2010).
Francesc Casadesús – Grec Festival de Barcelona
Passionate about Culture, reading, committed to associationism and with great curiosity to know other ways of looking at the world, he studied Psychology in Barcelona combining it with classes at the Institut del Teatre and later graduated from the SNDO in Amsterdam. After his master’s degree he started working in cultural management and in the production of shows for the Degira company, the management of the Institut de Cultura de Vic, programming of the Teatre Atlàntida and marketing at the Museu d’Art Contemporani MACBA. From 2005 to 2017 he was in charge of the direction and programming of the Mercat de les Flors as Casa de la Danza and currently he is excited about the project that he is carrying out as Artistic Director of the Grec Festival for the opportunity to support a new talent generation to the city he loves, Barcelona.
ABOUT SEGAL TALKS The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center is proud to announce the new line-up of its new global series, SEGAL TALKS. Since the beginning in March the series featured over 150 talks with 150 artists from 50 countries. New York, US, and international theatre artists, curators, researchers, and academics will talk daily during the week for one hour with Segal Center’s director, Frank Hentschker, about life and art in the Time of Corona and speak about challenges, sorrows, and hopes for the new Weltzustand— the State of the World. After a break in August the series will now also focus on Theatre, Performance and The Political, highlighting the Segal Center’s 2023 New York International Festival of the Arts Project and the Center’s Public Park Project. The Segal Center is the only theatre institution in NYC and the US creating new, original, daily content for the global field of theater and performance. The series was conceived, created and curated by Frank Hentschker in March 2020.
SEGAL TALKS are free, open access, without ads will be live-streamed in English from Monday to Friday on HowlRound Theatre Commons and on the Segal Center Facebook.
