Nikolaevka’s School 3 in Donetsk Region was partially bombed during the military operations of summer 2014. The school became a place full of deconstructed souls and unspoken pain. The film is based on a documentary performance by Natalia Vorozhbyt and Georg Genoux with students of this school. Their work has since grown into a full production featuring original autobiographical texts written by children in the 8th, 9th, and 10th grades which they perform themselves. They each address how their lives have been affected by the war. These are children who hid in basements while bombs exploded around them, students who had to bury friends and loved ones, people who were ready to give up. This film testifies to these students’ remarkable resilience and depicts only a small portion of their incredible strength. The stories they tell need to be shared with others in order to justify the students’ own experience of trust and belief – these are people who truly want to be heard.

With the means of theatre, Theatre of Displaced People helps internally displaced people to start a new normal life on a new place. Refugees from Donbass, volunteers, and military personnel returning from active warfare – these are the heroes of the productions. The work features only real people and true stories about things that have actually happened in their lives. The project was conceived in August 2015 and by December 2015 was already named theatre project of the year by Ukrainian theatrical critics. The plays have toured extensively throughout Ukraine including performances at GOGOLfest in Kyiv and the DONKULT forum in Lviv. Now the team is working on the project Children and War – creating three performances on Donbass, in the towns near the frontline.
