Friday 3 | 12:30pm – 2:30pm Jan Lauwers / Needcompany – Goldfish Game (Belgium, 2002) 105 minutes | Elebash Recital Hall
English www.needcompany.org
Goldfish Game is a recognizable, contemporary moral fable that unfolds with the fatal inevitability of a Greek tragedy. It tells the story of a small community that disintegrates violently. The events take place in a blissful country house which over the years has become a meeting place for a group of intimate friends. But it becomes clear that this small world can only exist by the grace of various secrets, great ones and small ones.
At the Slamdance Film Festival (2004), Goldfish Game was awarded the ‘Grand Jury Honour for Best Ensemble Cast.’
Jan Lauwers (Antwerp, 1957) is an artist who works in just about every medium. Over the last thirty years, he has become best known for his pioneering work for the stage with Needcompany, which was founded in Brussels in 1986. Over the years he has also built up a substantial body of art work which was shown in an exhibition at BOZAR (Brussels), McaM (Shanghai) among others. Jan Lauwers was awarded with the ‘Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic Austria’ (2012). In 2014, he was rewarded with the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award at the Venice Biennale.
