Dedicated to artists at the forefront of contemporary New York City theatre and performance, PRELUDE features an array of artists working in theatrical and interdisciplinary performance. The festival gives audiences and artists a survey of the current New York moment via in-process performances, conversations, presentations, and workshops.
This documentary, shot over the three days of the 2016 PRELUDE festival, gathers artists, academics, and theatremakers from the five boroughs to reflect on the legacy and future of work-in-progress.
The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center at The Graduate Center, CUNY occupies the space between public arts presenter, academic publisher, and research institute. The Segal Center bridges the academic and professional performing arts communities, fostering dialogue between playwrights, directors, designers, choreographers, filmmakers, critics, and academics from around the world. The Segal Center presents a variety of completely free public programs, including staged readings, festivals celebrating New York and international performance, and screenings of performance works on film, as well as artists in conversation, academic lecture series, televised seminars, symposia, and arts in education programs. The Segal also publishes three free, open-access academic journals, numerous individual volumes, and maintains a longstanding visiting-scholars-from-abroad program.
